On April 14, the Ontario government announced a proposal to establish the Strengthening Talent Agency Regulation (STAR) Act, which aims to better protect entertainment workers by:
- Capping commission rates;
- Banning unauthorized fees;
- Requiring timely payment; and
- Mandating separate bank accounts for worker earnings.
If passed, the legislation would require Ontario employers to:
- Review and update their policies; and
- Communicate clearly with staff about upcoming changes and their rights.
