Sick Note not Required for Illness or Injury Leave – B.C.

On April 15, 2025, the B.C. government introduced Bill 11, Employment Standards Amendment Act. The proposed legislation will amend British Columbia’s Employment Standards Act to clarify that, in specified situations, employers cannot request – and employees are not required to provide – a sick note or similar documentation for illness or injury leave.

Currently, employees must provide their employers with sufficient proof to show that an illness or injury was the basis for their absence.

The amendments are expected to come into effect by fall 2025.

The National Payroll Institute will monitor these amendments and provide further details as they become available.
