Temporary Amendment to Reservist Leave

On March 12, 2025, the Alberta Government announced the Ministerial Order 2025-05 granting reservists the right to unpaid reservist leave to participate in Canadian Forces operations and activities related to the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit.

This includes both pre-deployment and post-deployment operations and activities.

The temporary reservist leave regulation related to the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit will expire on August 31, 2025.

Employers must understand that:

  • The leave is an unpaid leave to perform Canadian Forces operations (including pre- and post-deployment) outside Canada or inside Canada in relation to an emergency or to engage in training activities. Employees may take reservist leave for as long as the operations continue, or to participate in training.

  • Employees are eligible for reservist leave after 12 consecutive weeks of employment.

  • Employees must provide written notice to their employer at least four weeks in advance or as soon as practicable. The notice should include the expected return date. Employers may request proof of entitlement to reservist leave.
