On November 27, 2024, the Ontario government introduced Bill 229, Working for Workers Six Act, 2024. This bill aims to protect workers' health and well-being, promote skilled trades, and reduce costs.
Key measures include new parental leave, long-term illness leave, expanded cancer coverage for firefighters, WSIB changes, and increased fines under occupational health and safety. If passed, these changes will build on the previous five Working for Workers legislations.
Changes to the Employment Standards Act
Proposed changes to the Employment Standards Act include the introduction of a new 16-week job-protected parental leave for adoption and surrogacy, aligning with federal EI benefits changes for adoption.
Additionally, a new 27-week job-protected long-term illness leave for serious medical conditions, such as cancer or multiple sclerosis, will be introduced to align with federal EI benefits changes for sickness.
The National Payroll Institute will monitor these amendments and provide further details as they become available.
