2024 XML Specifications and Schema for Electronic Filing of Information Returns

On October 15, 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency (the CRA) published the updated 2024 XML specifications and schema, which are essential for the electronic filing of information returns such as the T4 slip and other similar returns.

The key changes include:

New fields are added:

  • BN9

  • BN15

  • Trust #

  • NR4#

The following fields have been removed:

  • Fields Type Code

  • Transmitter Number

  • Transmitter Type Indicator

  • Transmitter Address

The following fields have been updated:

  • Transmitter Name

  • Transmitter, Country Code

  • Limiting submissions to one return type.  Employers must now submit only one type of return per transmission. For example, a T4A return cannot be submitted together with a T4 return.

  • New online validations and reports: Adding additional online validation checks and detailed reports will help identify errors earlier in the submission process, ensuring greater accuracy and compliance with filing requirements.

Employers who transmit their own tax slips should:

  • Review the new XML specifications and schema to ensure they understand the latest changes and requirements for electronic filing.

  • Ensure that systems and processes are updated according to the new specifications to avoid non-compliance issues.

Reminder:

Due to the recent system updates, the CRA’s annual system shutdown for year-end maintenance and updates will occur earlier than usual from December 2, 2024, until January 12, 2025 (inclusive). Employers are advised to plan their filing activities accordingly to avoid any disruptions.
